The single “Burial Ground” starts with a folksy, jangly guitar line before transitioning into a ’60s-style arrangement with a flowing melody and rich vocal harmonies (Mercer provides backing vocals). The song’s upbeat melody contrasts with its death-themed lyrics.

Colin Meloy, the lead singer of the band, said that “Burial Ground’ is in that time-honored pop song tradition, a paean to hanging out in graveyards. The melody hook came to me in a dream, and I hummed it into my phone upon waking. Most dream songs are bad; this was the exception.”

“Burial Ground” is The Decemberists’ first new song since their 2018 EP, Traveling On. For more on the band, check out our ranking of every Decemberist album, from worst to best.
