A missing man from New York has been found dead in Virginia two months after he went missing and his bank account was emptied.

According to a press release by the Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office, medical examiners identified skeletal remains as those belonging to 33-year-old Terrence Smith.

Smith had been coming from New York when he arrived in Spotsylvania on Oct. 28 to visit a female acquaintance, per the release. The female acquaintance then reported him missing to the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office on Nov. 1, after Smith’s family discovered “he had not returned to New York and [they] had not heard from him.”

“When Mr. Smith’s family realized that he had not returned to New York and had not heard from him, they immediately became worried as this was out of character,” the press release read. “With persistence from the family, the female acquaintance reported him missing.”

After a detective used Smith's whereabouts and phone records to investigate the case, his remains were then found on Nov. 16, "not far from the home of the female acquaintance in the area of Timber Ridge Townhomes."

Meanwhile, according to PIX11 News, his family also discovered that Smith’s bank account had been cleared out during his time in Virginia.

“I just don’t understand what’s happening down there,” Smith’s older brother Michael Perry said, per the station. “We know the prime people involved.”

In the press release, the Sheriff's Office in Spotsylvania said that a cause of death has not been determined, concluding with “detectives are still actively investigating this incident.”
