Pearl Thusi born on 13 May 1988, is a 53-year-old South African actress, model, and presenter known for her roles as Patricia Kopong in the BBC/HBO comedy-drama series The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, Dayana Mampasi in the ABC thriller Quantico and Samkelo in the romance film Catching Feelings. In 2020, she starred in the titular role of Netflix’s first African original series, Queen Sono.

Pearl Thusi hails from the KwaNdengezi and Hammarsdale districts on the outskirts of Durban. She has two sisters and attended Pinetown Girls’ High School. She started her studies at the University of the Witwatersrand but she dropped out to make time for her career. In 2020 she resumed her studies at South African University.

She is a presenter on MTV and e.tv’s Lip Sync Battle Africa, and EbonyLife TV’s talk show Moments. She appeared as Paresa Motown on SABC 3’s soap opera Isidingo, co-hosted Live Amps with DJ Wallace and Rusand Shocha, and appeared on SABC 1’s Celebrity Gossip magazine show Real Life Goboza” as the moderator.

In 2016, Pearl Thusi was cast as a series regular in the role of Dayana Mampasi on the second season of the ABC thriller series Quantico, opposite Priyanka Chopra. In the same year, Pearl Thusi was cast as Samkelo in the romantic drama film Catching Feelings. The film was released in theaters on 9 March 2018. In 2017, Pearl Thusi starred as Brenda Riviera in the drama film Kalushi.

In 2018, Pearl Thusi became the new host of the third season of MTV Bases Behind the Story. That same year, she was cast as Queen Sono in the Netflix crime series Queen Sono. The series premiered on February 28, 2020, and received rave reviews from critics, with particular praise for Pearl Thusi’s performance.

In April 2020, Netflix renewed the series for a second season, however, on November 26, 2020, it was reported that Netflix canceled the series, citing production problems due to the COVID-19 pandemic. On December 15, 2020, she co-hosted the inaugural KZN Entertainment Awards with Somiji Murongo and in February 2021, Pearl Thusi was cast as Zama Zulu in the Netflix film Fistful of Vengeance released on February 17, 2022.

Pearl Thusi has had a successful modeling career, appearing in adverts for Vodacom, Edgars, Jet, Altech Netstar, DStv, Khomanani, SANBS, Toyota, Kellogg’s Special K, Danone, and KFC, among others. She was also selected to be a campaign ambassador for Castle Lite’s Feel the Beat of Sub Zero Experience featuring Kanye West and was the MC on the evening.

Pearl Thusi completed the Startup Ventures course at WITS Business School, as well as a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Studies from UNISA. She is also co-owner of AYANA Africa Modeling Agency and has a daughter with sports presenter Walter Mokoena.

Pearl Thusi is not known to be married but reportedly engaged to Australian businessman Shaun Bonnett whom she refers to as her husband though they aren’t known to be married.
