Cage touted as Capone for Untouchables prequel
This article is more than 16 years oldNicolas Cage could play a young Al Capone in Brian De Palma's forthcoming prequel to The Untouchables, his 1987 mob masterpiece.
The Ghost Rider star is in ongoing talks to star in the feature, entitled The Untouchables: Capone Rising, according to Variety.
As its name indicates, the movie will focus on the rise to power of the Chicago gangster, portrayed by Robert de Niro in the original feature. It will also focus on Capone's battle against US federal agent Jimmy Malone, played 20 years ago by Sean Connery, who was determined to bring down the crime king of 1930s Chicago.
It appears the movie will not feature Eliot Ness, the policeman who formed The Untouchables squad and was instrumental in bringing down the mobster. Ness was played by Kevin Costner in the original film.
The prequel to The Untouchables has long been in gestation. Last year, De Palma stepped onto the project when Training Day director Antoine Fuqua dropped out. It was reported at the time that Fuqua was trying to convince Sean Penn to play the young Capone.
The Untouchables was a commercial and critical hit for De Palma. It also won Connery his only Oscar, for best supporting actor. Cage and De Palma have worked together once before, on the 1998 Las Vegas-based thriller Snake Eyes.
